Now, if you are experiencing kidney disease or kidney dysfunction, there are a few things in your diet that you can be aware of to help manage your symptoms. Remember that every person could be in a different stage of kidney disease, so it can be very individualized for where you are at during your dysfunction. If you are at the beginning stages, you are going to want to moderately reduce or restrict your amount of protein. Kidneys help to metabolize the protein that we eat in our diet. A good, basic recommendation is .6 to .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. This is a good baseline to start with. Now, if you have gone on and maybe you are needing dialysis at this point, you are going to actually want to increase your protein. A good recommendation is 1.2 to 1.4 grams of kilogram, or of, excuse me, of protein per kilogram of body weight. If you have a dialysis center, you should have a registered dietitian there to help you fine-tune your diet specifically for you. Also be aware certain constituents in the foods we eat, nutrient things like potassium and sodium should be moderated or reduced as possible. Our kidneys also help to function this out, and the less amount of stress we can put on our kidneys, the better you are going to be able to do and try to avoid the dysfunction. So again, check with your dietitian at your dialysis center if you are there. If you are not on dialysis yet, try to limit your amount of protein and be aware of your sodium and potassium intake.
